IMPACT
• performance • permanent exhibition in public space•
Inspired by a sudden meteor sighting in the Egyptian White desert, I started investigating the impact of an impact. With the release of enormous weight, attention is focused on these inevitable unexpected moments, which always leaves us with an impression. The question is… which one. The preparation of my man-made stone, the fall and live impact, and that it remains permanently in public space, are all part of the work. The stone is made of concrete and steel, weighs 2.900KG and has a diameter of 150cm. IMPACT was the opening performance of OORtreders Festival.
That moment of contact… an object with another object. An object with a body or a body with another body… When does touch have an impact? Touch stroke punch pull! To hold on. When I touch you, there seems to be a consequence. What force must there be before we call it an impact? An impact in what, exactly? I don’t believe pushing can exist without pulling. I don’t believe pull can exist without a push. An asteroid needs gravity to ever be able to make an impact. Space-time needs objects to become measurable. Gravity needs time and space. Heavy objects need meteors. Heavier objects always need meteors.
